This Thursday, 20 August 2026, brings a rather unsettled feel for many parts of the UK, with more cloud than sunshine and some rain around — quite a cool summer’s day, especially further north. The wettest conditions are likely across north-west England, where early rain could be heavy for a time and may lead to spray and slower journeys on the roads. Northern England more widely starts damp, with outbreaks of rain during the morning, then a gradual easing later, though it may stay rather grey and fresh. Scotland has a cool, showery day ahead, with rain at times — particularly early on and again into the afternoon. Temperatures here will struggle compared with recent summer standards, so it may feel more like early autumn in the breeze. Northern Ireland also begins wet in places, though the rain should become more patchy as the day goes on. Across the Midlands, there’ll be some rain around in the early hours and morning, with a drier spell possible through the middle of the day before further patchy rain returns towards evening. Wales sees a mostly cloudy day too, with some light to moderate rain likely around lunchtime, though not everywhere will stay wet for long. Further south, conditions are a little less intense. The south-east and eastern England may see some light rain or showers, especially around the middle of the day, but there should be drier intervals too. The south-west looks breezy with only small amounts of rain for most, and perhaps a few brighter breaks later on. Winds will be noticeable around many coastal areas, generally moderate to fresh, adding to the cooler feel. Highs range from the mid-teens in Scotland and northern England to around 20 or 21°C in the south and south-east. So, not a washout everywhere, but certainly a day to keep a waterproof handy — and if you’re travelling in the north-west, allow a little extra time this morning.
